SPACE BATTALION

The U.S. Army added another space battalion to its repertoire on October 17, 2017. What is a space battalion and why is the U.S. military so interested in space beyond Earth?

Space Battalion. Sounds like something straight out of a sci fi movie. Did you know the U.S. has had one since 1999? Well, now we have two.

The U.S. Army uses the most data via satellites out of all military branches. There's a dependency. That's led to these battalions to be put into place to fight back against satellite "jamming" or if enemies were to attack military satellites.

Sgt. Maj. James Ross from the U.S. Army's 1st Space Brigade discusses his job and the brigade's purpose.

The battalion will be working within the 1st Space Brigade in Colorado Springs, Colorado. 200 reserve soldiers will now join an active-duty battalion to ensure that they have the data and signals they need from space. Two units from the team are already deployed.

Though there isn't much information about what exactly the battalion does, it is clear that this will be a growing company for the Army as space technology and dependence on that technology continues to progress and grow.
